Pre-Departure Lashing Checks for Heavy & OOG Cargo

A practical checklist for project cargo teams before heavy or oversized cargo begins a road or sea movement.

Check the support and bedding first

Cargo restraint starts at the interface between the cargo and its support. Confirm that saddles, skids, timber, mats or other bedding provide stable and appropriate support without creating damaging point loads.

Review restraint in every movement direction

Consider how the cargo could move longitudinally, transversely or vertically. Restraints should work as a system rather than as isolated lashings.

Inspect lashing angles and contact points

Very shallow or poorly oriented lashings may provide less useful restraint. Check that contact points are suitable and that lashings are not damaged by sharp edges.

Confirm blocking and chocking

Where appropriate, blocking and chocking reduce reliance on lashing tension alone. Confirm that these elements are secure and properly positioned.

Look for slack, damaged or poorly protected lashings

Check for slack chains, damaged webbing, twisted straps, poor edge protection, unsecured tensioners or visible wear.

Protect vulnerable cargo surfaces

Securing arrangements should not create the very damage they are intended to prevent. Use suitable contact protection where chains, wires or straps bear against painted or vulnerable surfaces.

Photograph the final arrangement

Capture wide views and detailed photographs showing the lashing pattern, support points, tensioning devices and cargo identification before departure.

When specialist engineering is needed

Complex cargo may require engineering calculations, transport drawings, class or marine warranty review. A field survey can verify the visible arrangement, but it does not replace specialist engineering where the movement requires it.
